Cultural appropriation is when a dominant culture adopts or exploits a minority culture. This book helped me to see what cultural appropriationis and how to walk away from it. “Why talk about racism if it’s so risky and so painful? Because not talking about it is killing us.” What is Cultural Appropriation? We can chip away at icebergs that sink entire groups of people. This book brings big ideas into bite-sized chapters so that we see that we can tackle seemingly impossible challenges. She divides it into 17 common questions that white folks usually have when they begin a discussion, and she writes how black folks may feel during those answers. Ijoma Oluo writes the book like a conversation.
So You Want to Talk About Race is engaging and raw, with definitions and explanations for whites and blacks alike. We all need to feel the weight and remove the burden. The burden of racism has been on blacks for far too long. The fact that hundreds of years of abuse, exclusion, and ignorance all combine to make situations as they are means that the patterns we see stem from generational experiences of racism. When a conversation includes aspects of racism, while folks will ask, “Is it really about race?” It’s about race if it disproportionally or differently affects people of color (16). We have to be able to look racism in the eye and counter it,” Oluo implores. “ is everywhere, in every corner of our lives.
